How do i mix and what do i mix with the paint to get it to dry faster?
Most of the tubes of paints you’re using should be pigment mixed with linseed oil – but not all of them are, so check the ingredients to see what you’re working with. Linseed takes three to five days to “dry” (it actually hardens due to oxidization – same way iron turns to rust). You can find treated linseed oil that oxidizes faster – the first is called “boiled” linseed oil, but it’s actually mixed in with turpentine and other polymers. The other is “polymerized” oil, which is boiled. (I blame marketing.)
You can !minimally! speed the process up by putting your painting in a warm and well ventilated area where it will get lots of light.
You’ll also find other kinds of oils used in Oil Painting. Walnut oil is supposed to dry faster, but can be hard to find because it goes rancid very quickly. If you do find it, buy only what you need for the same reason. Poppyseed dries slower than linseed, so you’ll probably want to avoid it. DO NOT get corn, cottonseed or sesame oils. They never completely dry, and should be labeled as “semi-drying oils”. Don’t buy “non-drying” for the same reason.
